→ A Note From Jess

Hey Bakersfield families,

I know we’re still in October, but my brain is already wandering into the holidays—the plans, the gifts, the calendar, and all the little things that somehow become a very long list.

Between family life and running The Bakersfield Mom, this is a busy season. And this year, I’m trying to pay attention to our capacity before we’ve already filled it.

We’ve been talking about what feels manageable for our family, how we want to spend our time, and where we can leave more room for rest. I love having things to look forward to. I also want us to have the energy to enjoy them.

That’s bringing up questions about traditions, too: what we want to keep, what we might let go of, and what we’d like to make our own.

So as you look through this week’s events, I hope you find something your family will enjoy—and feel comfortable leaving some space on the calendar, too.

— Jess

Growing more than a garden

Before food reaches the table, there’s a whole world for kids to discover. Edible Schoolyard Kern County brings that learning into gardens and kitchens, where students plant, grow and prepare food while exploring the connections between what they eat and the world around them.

This Saturday’s Fall Fest is a chance for families to get a closer look. Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard is celebrating with a pumpkin patch, face painting, winter plants for home gardens, and fall food including seasonal pizza, pumpkin muffins and apple cider.

Saturday, October 24 · 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

The clocks fall back right after Halloween

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1. At 2 a.m., clocks move back to 1 a.m.

Put it on your family calendar now, check any clocks that need changing manually, and leave a little breathing room in your Sunday plans. An extra hour on the clock doesn’t necessarily mean an extra hour of sleep with kids.
